The word, “Kairos”, is a Greek word meaning in God’s Special Time. For example, a mother is given a due date for her baby in Chronological or “Chronos” time (ie, January 25, 2016) but when the baby actually comes on January 12, 2016 that would be a “Kairos Time”, or God’s special or appointed time.
We believe that the families of the incarcerated are “doing time” right along with their loved ones. Kairos Outside is designed to let those families know that there is a community of individuals that cares about them and their needs.
Kairos Outside of Amarillo, services Amarillo and it’s surrounding areas in the panhandle. We host two retreat weekends a year for the women family members and close friends of those who are currently incarcerated, or whose loved ones were previously incarcerated, or perhaps even were incarcerated previously themselves.
The weekend is a way to help strengthen the family unit and encourage women, family members, and close friends of those who are incarcerated.
We provide a secure place for women to share their struggles with each other and with those who are empathetic to their situations. The women on the outside, in many ways, may have to be stronger than their relatives on the inside, in order to survive in today’s world.
Kairos Outside is a Christian faith based ministry which addresses the spiritual needs of women and their families who are affected by incarceration. By sharing the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ, Kairos Outside hopes to change hearts, transform lives, and impact the world. Kairos Outside sprang from the Cursillo movement and is supported by volunteers from the 4th Day movements such as Cursillo, Emmaus, and others. As a ministry, Kairos Outside embraces a diverse group of volunteers working together to fulfill Christ’s call to action in Matthew 25:36.
It is our hope that Kairos Outside will help these women find strength for their life journeys and give them a chance to find and build friendships that may last a lifetime.
